The political world is still reeling from President Donald Trump's unprecedented threats to Iran in an expletive-ridden social media post on Easter Sunday, and people are now comparing it to that of former President Barack Obama.
On April 4, the White House shared a video of Trump delivering a message in the lead-up to Easter, where he praised the "most glorious miracle in all of time, the resurrection of our lord and savior Jesus Christ," and quoted bible passages.
He added: "Happy Easter to all, may God bless you, may God bless the United States of America."
A Presidential Message on Easter was also posted to The White House website on April 3, declaring "the First Lady and I join with Christians all across our Nation and around the world in rejoicing in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, whose triumph over sin and victory over death secured the promise of redemption and the hope of eternal life for all who believe in Him as Lord and Savior."
However, it's his post on Truth Social on Easter Sunday that has sent shockwaves around the world, as he wrote: "Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the F****n’ Strait, you crazy b******s, or you’ll be living in Hell - JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah. President DONALD J. TRUMP."
Now, online commentators have been reacting to that particular post—and comparing it to other Easter messages from former presidents over the years. Newsweek has contacted the White House via email for comment on this story.
On Threads, user @kristaveadwarren, who has previously shared posts critical of Trump on her page, shared multiple images depicting social media posts from presidents past.
"Ladies and gents, I bring you Easter tidings from presidents past and present," she wrote, including three screenshots of Obama's, Joe Biden's and Trump's Easter messages.
On April 5, Obama wrote on X: "To everyone celebrating Easter, Michelle and I wish you a joyful holiday filled with reminders of the enduring power of faith and hope." His X post received over 3.4 million views and more than 582,000 likes.
Biden, in 2025, shared a family portrait and wrote that he wishes "everyone celebrating today a peaceful and joyful Easter."
Finally, she shared Trump's now infamous "crazy b******s" post.
Her post had a big reaction, with more than 2,000 likes, as one user wrote: "That last one really gives you the warm and fuzzies huh. It's like a warm hug on a cold day."
Another admitted they "can't believe this."
The post was shared to a channel titled "Trump is fully unhinged," meaning the responses were more likely to be biased.
On X, user @ImBreckWorsham, a self-proclaimed conservative and supporter of conservative politics but who has been critical of Trump, shared Trump's Truth Social post, and got a reply from @ghartman02, who has also been critical of the Trump administration on their account.
That user replied with a quote from President Ronald Reagan's radio Easter message from 1983, where he declared: "This is a time of hope and peace, when our spirits are filled and lifted. It's a time when we give thanks for our blessings—chief among them, freedom, peace, and the promise of eternal life."
On Facebook, author and Trump critic Zack Hunt also shared side-by-sides of Obama and Trump's posts, and wrote sarcastically: "It's not easy, but see if you can spot the differences between Trump and Obama's Easter messages this year."
Trump's threats towards Iran have continued, and on Monday he gave the country until 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or else face the "complete demolition" of its infrastructure.
In a press conference on Monday, Trump said the "entire country can be taken out in one night" by targeting its energy and transportation infrastructure.
Tehran has so far refused proposals for a ceasefire, and has said it wants a permanent end to the war.
